approves changes to health regulations by Salmon industry

approves changes to health regulations by Salmon industry:Companies which are part of SalmonChile are satisfied by the changes to the technical report for Aquaculture Health Regulations (RESA), by resolution of the National Fisheries Council (CNP).

The president of the organization, César Barros, stated that "the salmon industry, finds it absolutely imperative to adopt the recommendations of the CNP, which is the most important opinion of the sector."

Barros added that "more stringent measures have been incorporated to make rapid progress on sustainability in the salmon industry."
The Fisheries Council suggested the prohibition amend - after one year since the publication of the RESA - the use of estuaries for smolting Atlantic salmon, coho and trout.

One of the claims of some members of the sector is that the regulation is only for salmon, so it should also cover other diseases and health contingencies, not just the infectious salmon anemia (ISA) virus.

In this regard, the Fisheries Council suggested to enact specific programs for diseases such as SRS, infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN) and vibriosis, which have historically been more damaging than the ISA virus.

However, Vjeko Rafaeli, the general manager of Trusal, a company that left SalmonChile in 2009, believes that excessive optimism exists in the Chilean salmon industry.

Rafaeli argues that while new regulations are a step forward, there are still "significant differences between industry players, such as" the use of estuaries and sea waters for breeding, for example," reports Estrategia.

The head of Trusal also noted that he is not in agreement with the adjustment of the distance between salmon farms, as he does'n consider it a useful tool to curb diseases.

"From a biological standpoint, there is wildlife that moves from side to side, tides, production of mussels, artisanal fishermen with their boats, etc," so it does not guarantee health security.

Rafaeli clarified the trust that exists in the recovery of the industry, since the possibility of meeting and exceeding the production levels prior to the ISA virus, will depend "on the concessions and health breaks" and also "the capital reach the sector."
