Fishing report New Update For Reason and weather

Fishing report New Update For Reason and Weather

Local lakes: High winds and rain have hampered anglers looking to do a little rainbow trout fishing over the holidays. A few anglers were bank-fishing at Empire Lakes in Coos Bay, but the reports we received were that fishing was pretty slow.

Local rivers: Winter steelhead fishing is starting to pick up on the Chetco River. The river level has been too high for driftboats, but bank anglers plunking at Social Security Bar have been catching some nice fish. Straight Spin ’n’ Glo’s in sizes 2 to 6 or Spin ’n’ Glo’s with a nightcrawler have been working best. Anglers plunking on the lower Rogue River gravel bars are reporting good winter steelhead fishing. One out of every 10 steelhead being caught has been a hatchery fish, which anglers can keep. The good news is that starting Jan. 1, anglers can keep one wild steelhead a day ” five per year ” on the Rogue.

The fall Chinook fishing on the Elk and Sixes rivers is starting to wind down. Sixes River has been running too high to fish this past week. Anglers fishing high on the Elk River are still picking up a few Chinook, along with some nice winter steelhead. The South Fork of the Coquille River has been high and muddy with all the recent rains. Anglers are picking up a few steelhead near Laverne Park on the North Fork of the Coquille. Anglers plunking near the town of Coquille are still reporting good fishing.

The best steelhead reports have been coming from the West Fork and East Fork of the Millicoma River. These streams clear quickly after rains, and anglers are reporting excellent fishing. A few winter steelhead are starting to show up in Tenmile Creek, which is one of the easiest rivers to fish for steelhead. Tenmile Creek never really blows out from rainstorms because its flow is controlled by the outflow of Tenmile Lakes.

Inside Coos Bay: Josh from The Bite’s On Bait and Tackle shop had a good day rock cod fishing inside the bay last week. He caught a nice limit of black rock cod and brought home some nice Dungeness crab, as well. Anglers fishing the jetties near Charleston also are reporting catching a few nice ling cod. Lings come close to the nearshore rocks and jetties to spawn each winter.

Area shellfish: For those braving the weather, crabbing in lower Coos Bay continues to be very good. Boaters are still catching limits of Dungeness crab, along with plenty of red rock crab. Kids Fish Free update: We would like to thank Peter and Ruth Coleman of Bandon for their generous donation to the program. Earl Rankin has now refurbished 285 rod-and-reel combinations that have been given to local youngsters.
