Game and Fish urges ice fishing precautions ; LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department urges anglers to use caution while ice fishing this winter.
Ice conditions on lakes and reservoirs often fluctuate through the winter because of changing water levels. Freezing and thawing weather patterns also can contribute to unstable ice conditions.
The department says four inches of clear ice is usually safe for fishing. But white or cloudy ice is much weaker and should be at least twice that thick to be safe.
The department says people should stay off of frozen rivers entirely and never trust any ice to support the weight of a vehicle.
