High winds, cold water tough for redfish, good for trout tips and triks
Conditions: Winter cold fronts and cold water are making it difficult to target redfish. Strong winds make it hard to push-pole in shallow water and stir up the water to make it difficult to sight cast. Strong wave action causes water to slap the hull, which will spook reds long before you see them.
What to target: Higher winds make for ideal conditions for trout fishing. I use my bottom machine to locate grass flats in 3 to 5 feet of water. I motor to the edge upwind and deploy a sea anchor. The anchor will slow my drift and allow for more effective coverage. If I have a good drift, I run back upwind and use my GPS track to arrange the next drift.
Tackle: Light tackle can make trout fishing more enjoyable. A 10-pound braided line (size of 2-pound diameter) with 20-pound camouflage leader and quarter-ounce red jighead with a soft plastic bait is my favorite lure. There are many plastic tails; it is just a matter of preference. Root beer and white are my favorite colors.
