hits out over fish quotas.............Allan

hits out over fish quotas.............Allan :New fishing quotas imposed by Europe have served again to underline the need for local control of fisheries, says Isles MSP, Alasdair Allan.

Speaking after confirmation of further cuts in quotas for the Scottish fishing fleet, Dr Allan commented: “This proves the need as never before for Scotland to take more control for itself over fisheries and to see an end to the dismal failure that is the Common Fisheries Policy in its present form which has achieved neither fairness for the industry nor met its environmental objectives.”

He hit out at the conclusion to the quota talks after expressing disappointment at the 15% cut in prawn quota for west coast - a move which will particularly affect the Western Isles fleet - and the 25% cut for west coast haddock.

The expected 15% cut in megrim was scaled back to 2%.

Pointed out the Isles MSP: “The European Commission must accept that Scottish fishermen are already leading Europe in conservation measures - those efforts deserve recognition. These talks highlight the human cost of Scotland’s relative lack of say over decisions which need to be made more locally.”
