The rainbow bag :record at Blakewell fishery is over by Bimson's

RON BIMSON has shattered Blakewell trout fishery's four-fish bag record with a stunning quartet of rainbow trout totalling 51lb 6oz. Ron had not been able to fish for more than a year so this was a welcome return to sport.

The trout weighed in at 14lb 3oz, 12lb 9oz, 12lb 6oz and 11lb 8oz.
John Nickel, the fishery manager, said the venue has a number of large rainbows going into the lake over the coming weeks with several around the 20lb mark.
So long as the fishery is clear of ice, rainbow trout will continue to respond well to anglers' offerings.

On the coldest days lures or large nymphs fish well with varied retrieves. When the sun breaks through there could be the opportunity to tempt fish with buzzer patterns.

Dave Richards, of Berrynarbor, took a rainbow of 13lb 12oz on his latest trip to the water, while fellow Wistlandpound Flyfishing Club member Darren Grant took a 32lb bag that included a rainbow of 7lb and a 4lb 15oz brown trout.

Hew Jones, North Tawton, landed a rainbow of 10lb and Justin Read a rainbow of 8lb 9oz. John and Richard at Blakewell would like to wish all their angling visitors a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

The new date for the postponed Christmas Open will be reported as soon as it is confirmed. A party of anglers from Barnstaple Rod 'n' Reelers and Triple Hook Club braced a biting easterly wind to venture out aboard charter boat Jay Jay.
Fishing a rough ground mark three miles north of Ilfracombe, they found the spurdog on a feeding frenzy, landing more than 30 to a weight of 12lb 4oz.

They also landed bull huss, ling and small conger.
A move to another mark gave further sport with whiting, dogfish, double-figure bull huss, a dab and a conger of about 25lb.
Jay Jay will make four to five-hour trips over Christmas, targeting spurdog and cod.

Trips cost £20 and there are vacancies on December 27, 29 and 30. Call Dave on 07827 679189 or 01271 863398 for details.
Barnstaple Triple Hook Club's Christmas match had to cancelled for the first time in its history on Sunday. In September 2009, a party of anglers from the Royal Exchange, Torrington, were fishing off Clovelly when Neil McDonnell hooked into an unusual fish.

Keith Armishaw, of River Reads bookshop, immediately identified the fish as an amberjack, a species he had seen in Florida.
After submitting a record claim and receiving formal identification from the National Marine Aquarium, the long wait is finally over and the record has been ratified. The fish is now in the hands of a taxidermist and will be displayed in Neil's pub. Roger Northcote has even composed a song to celebrate the record-breaking catch.Little Comfort Farm is to close early this year as the lake is frozen.

The fishery's facilities will be upgraded during the closure, with the car parking and toilets refurbished.
I would like to wish all readers a Merry Christmas and fish-filled new year.
