A SMASHING WAY TO BEAT THE BIG CHILL IN ICE FISHING

A SMASHING WAY TO BEAT THE BIG CHILL IN ICE FISHING: ANGLERS are battling to beat the big freeze by smashing the ice to carry on catching.

Fishermen have used anything from chainsaws to JCB diggers to smash through ice up to a foot thick on some lakes.
But some venues have seen trade plummet as the cold takes hold.

WIN A LUXURY CRUISE TRIP FOR TWO WORTH £2,500!

Richmond Lakes, in Lincoln, is just one of hundreds of complexes that hasn’t seen an angler on its banks for weeks.
“We’re frozen solid here with over two feet of snow on top of the ice,” said fishery manager Matt Muffon.
“I’ve been hearing the fish smacking into the ice from underneath.”
A long freeze last season led to the deaths of thousands of carp by oxygen starvation and the losses are already being counted this term too.
One of the first venues to suffer a fish kill is Willenhall Memorial Park, near Wolverhampton.
“It’s mainly carp that have died,” said assistant park keeper Andrew Cooper.
“We’ve started breaking the ice where we can and the Environment Agency has been down to test the oxygen levels in the water, so we hope we’ve now got it under control.”
