Big Lake Park to be stocked with 1,000 fish
just because it’s winter doesn’t mean people can’t go fishing.
To promote trout fishing, a new event will be held Saturday at Big Lake Park, 2600 N. Eighth St., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It’s sponsored by the Council Bluffs Parks and Recreation Department and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
“We’re trying to get people fishing for trout,” said Geoff Hubbard, the city’s recreation superintendent.
Trout like colder environments, he said, and should be hungry right now.
DNR officials will stock Big Lake with 1,000 trout on Friday for the next day’s event, Hubbard said.
“They will be full size and ready to be caught and ready to eat,” he said. “When trout get stocked to a new location, they usually stay together and so fishing should be a bit quicker. It may be like picking fish out of a barrel.”
Among the fish being stocked are 200 brook trout, which will be the prized catch.
“A Brook trout has a stripe under the belly,” Hubbard said.
The 800 other fish to be stocked are rainbow trout that feature a stripe on their side, he said. For those who catch a brook trout, prizes will be given away from Woods Sporting Goods and Bass Pro Shops, Hubbard said.
Big Lake is frozen over, so the fishermen will need their own equipment to make holes in the ice to fish, he said.
“The ice is OK. It’s already at 12-inches thick.”
“A wax worm on a hook under a small bobber works as good as anything, and trout are just as eager to take small crappie jigs,” said Bryan Hayes, fisheries biologist with the DNR.
Those 16 years of age or older must have the proper fishing license and a trout stamp, and there is a limit of five trout per stamp, Hubbard said. Children younger than 16 who are fishing with a properly licensed adult don’t need a trout stamp to fish or possess trout, but together the limit is still five trout per stamp.
A fishing license and trout fee can be obtained at any local hunting and fishing license sales vendor or from the link on the DNR homepage.
