Fishing Report Oregon january 13  2011

Saltwater

Oregon Inlet

The fleet's attention is still firmly fixed on striped bass, which continue to be caught in limits and within the legal three-mile line. Sure, there should be plenty of yellowfin tuna, and maybe even some bluefin tuna, in the Gulf Stream, but they'll have to wait until the striped bass bite subsides. And as long as the weather stays cold, the fish should remain here. In the Albemarle Sound, small striped bass were reported a mile east of the N.C. 32 bridge in 20 feet of water. Buxton/Hatteras

A very few have been out fishing, but they haven't had any luck, for puppy drum or speckled trout. The good news is that nobody has seen any ice forming in the sound or any dead trout. Although weather has been very cold and pushed good numbers of striped bass down to the Oregon Inlet area, there hasn't been a reported catch of one down Hatteras Island. Contact: Red Drum Tackle 252-995-5414; www.hatteras-island. com .

Ocracoke

This is the deadest time of the year for fishing on the island. The bait shop doesn't even keep regular hours. With temperatures in the mid 30s this week, there are better times to be targeting puppy drum and speckled trout. Contact: Tradewinds Bait & Tackle 252-928-5491, www.fishtradewinds.com.

Cape Lookout/

Bogue Inlet

There have been a few reports of red drum in the marshes, but neither drum or speckled trout appear to be in the creeks. The holes seem to be abundant with striped mullet, though. The Bogue Inlet Fishing Pier surf also is devoid of any fish. Much of the past week, the surf has been very clear, but the only thing that anyone has caught has been dogfish. There have been more reports of striped bass sighted at the Cape Lookout shoals, especially on the east side, mixed in with lots of red drum and black drum. Topsail Island

While most fishermen are waiting for things to warm up, a few have been out and have had a little success, whether for red drum and black drum in the surf or for flounder and drum in the back waters. Still, the bite has been anything but easy. Contact: East Coast Discount Tackle 910-328-1887, www. east coastsports.com .

Wilmington/
Wrightsville Beach

With snapper and grouper seasons closed until May, offshore fishermen have focused on black sea bass on the offshore wrecks and reefs. Contact: Tex's Tackle 910-791-1763, www.texstackle.com.

Southport/Sunset Beach

A few red drum and speckled trout are still biting in shallow water, but few fishermen have been out in this weather. Offshore, the king mackerel bite has been hit and miss. Contact: Dutchman Creek Bait & Tackle 910-457-1221; www. yeah rightcharters.com ; www.oifishing center.com .

Freshwater

Falls Lake

Bass fishermen have stayed away for the most part, but largemouth bass will bite in this weather, often on jigging spoons and blade baits. Water level: normal 251.5, Wednesday 248.93, last week 248.9, full pool 264.8. Contact: Carolina Outdoor Sportsman 919-676-6799; Outhouse Tackle 919-217-0085; www.wmi.org.

Kerr Lake

A little ice has formed on the lake, back in the coves, where the wind is not hitting the surface and around some ramps. But the lake hasn't been shut down. A few anglers have targeted blue catfish along the ledges, and a few have been after striped bass and crappie. Water level: normal 300, Wednesday 297.69, last week 297.8, full pool 320. Contact: Bobcat's Bait & Tackle 434-374-8381; www.kerrlake.com.

Jordan Lake

Although this cold weather shouldn't make crappie much less willing to bite, it has made fishermen much less willing to fish. Fishermen were catching decent numbers under the U.S. 64 bridge until the cold snapped last week. Water level: normal 216, Wednesday 216.48, last week 216.3, full pool 240. Contact: Wilsonville General Store 919-362-7101.

Hyco Lake

With the warm-water discharge from the power plant, this is the best place to target largemouth bass in the area. There also has been a decent crappie and white bass bite. Contact: Hyco Lake Marina 336-599-2211

Shearon Harris Lake

The latest word on any crappie bite was last week, when fish were reported in 18 to 36 feet of water. Since then, the temperature has dropped and nobody has been after them. Contact: The Tackle Box 919-557-8255; www.wmi.org.
