Increase production and exports, one of the goals for the new Minister of Fisheries
For the first time, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture will be headed by a woman, Ideli Salvatti. The new minister took office with the mission to increase production, consumption and exports from Brazil, which must be handled on a budget during the fiscal year.
On assuming office, Salvatti emphasized that the challenge outlined by President Dilma Rousseff is that the fishing industry must reach the momentum and visibility of the agricultural sector.
Aquaculture in Brazil grew by 43 per cent last year and this represents "nearly three times the increase that was recorded in the beef, poultry and pig sector," said the minister.
Salvatti also highlighted the potential of marine waters and rivers in Brazil, and said that the "Amazon has everything needed to produce more fish than meat," reports Terra.
The latest data available indicates that during 2009, Brazil produced approximately 1.2 million tonnes of fish and on the last two years the average consumption rose from 6 to 9 kg per person annually.
According to Salvatti, with policies that are already ongoing, as established by former Minister Gregolin, this year they will achieve significant results.
The minister also mentioned that among the challenges of her administration are continuing programs for the chain structure and social inclusion as well as the management of shared fishery resources, all objectives of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Plan launched in 2008.
The head of the Ministry of Fisheries recalled that until eight years ago this organization was a department under the Ministry of Agriculture, noting that it was her predecessor, Altemir Gregolin, who emphasized the importance of granting the status of a ministry.
Salvatti added that thanks to the impetus given, fish production in the country grew by 25 per cent in the last eight years.
She further stated that the Ministry is now "an organ of public interest, which represents one million people (between fishermen and fish farmers) that were historically neglected and abandoned by public policies, reports Agencia Brasil.
Ideli Salvatti was born in Sao Paulo, she is 58 years old and graduated with a degree in physics at the Federal University of Parana.
She is one of the founders of the Workers Party and the Central Unica dos Trabajadores (CUT) in Santa Catarina. She was also the first female senator from that state.Read More ...
