Sardine industry to boosting sales 2011

The South Australian Fisheries Minister, Michael O'Brien, says exports of sardines could be significantly increased without changing fishing quotas.

The Sardine Industry Association wants to boost exports of sardines to China during the next five years.

This season's total allowable commercial catch will remain at 34,000 tonnes.

Mr O'Brien says achieving an increase in exports is possible within the current catch limits.

"It would just mean that there'd be a movement from feed stock for tuna to table," he said.

"I think we're going to see a greater financial return obviously for the industry and I think this is very much a step in the right direction."Read More ...
