Women in fisheries working

This letter aims to point out the unsafe and unhealthy working conditions, which the women working in Karachi-based fisheries have to go through on a daily basis. The nature of their work demands extreme cold temperatures, attentive workers and continuous screening of fishery items.

Now the sad part is that most of these women are not given adequate wages for the amount of work they do. They are usually considered unskilled due to which their wages are kept low. They are not given transportation or medical facilities and continue to work in cold temperatures without any proper uniforms. Due to constant screening of the prickly items like prawns, etc, the fingertips of these women get so damaged that they dye their hands with henna to hide it.

The concerned authorities must look into the plight of these women who continue to work under such conditions and should force the fish companies to reform their working conditions for women. Read More ...
