Changes to fishing laws havoc for fishermen and fish lovers create
HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Recent laws aimed at protecting certain species of fish from "over fishing" are forcing some Grand Strand fishing companies out of business.
"It's real vital to get it changed because its going to hurt the economy and the tourism here in South Carolina and Horry County." said Keith Logan, a professional fisherman in the North Strand.
Some Grand Strand fishermen believe the new laws that lowered catch limits for certain species is destroying the fishing industry. Several dozen of those concerned fisherman showed up for an organizational meeting Thursday night, believing as a united voice their concerns have a better chance of reaching lawmakers.
"Whether your talking about professional fishermen or recreation fisherman, we all know that ocean provides for us." said Ron McManus, organizer of the annual Dixie Chicken Fishing Tournament. That tournament has been placed on hold this year as a result of both high fuel costs and stricter federal catching limits.Read More ...
