Kniffens reel at fishing tournament in $12,000 prize


Keith Kniffen of Eaton Rapids and Ron Kniffen of Lansing teamed up to win the $12,000 first-place prize Sunday in the 12th annual Midwest Open Ice Fishing Tournament on Clark Lake.

The two-man team reeled in crappie and bluegill totaling 5.59 pounds. By comparison, the winning weight at the previous year’s tournament was 6.64 pounds.

Bob Richardson and Chad Hamlin took second place with 4.88 pounds of fish and won $3,500.

About 300 people took part in the tournament, and more than $40,000 was given out in prizes and merchandise.

Tom Knutson, the tournament director, said Richardson, owner of the Subway in Brooklyn, set it up so all the fish caught were taken to the Jackson Interfaith Shelter. Read More ...
