Five go fishing in Pembrokeshire 2011

Five go fishing in Pembrokeshire 2011

Pembrokeshire Fish Week is delighted to announce a spectacular new event for the 2011 festival.
The annual seafood cookery Masterclass at the Torch Theatre in Milford Haven will feature not one, but five top British chefs.
‘Cook your Catch’ on June 29 will feature renowned chefs Mark Hix, Valentine Warner, Mitch Tonks, Bryn Williams and Anthony Evans - all on the same bill!
And there’s a catch! Earlier in the day, the chefs will go fishing off the South Pembrokeshire coast on June 29. They have been challenged to transform their catch - line-caught sustainable species from our coastline - in front of a live audience that evening at the Torch Theatre into a delicious fresh fish supper.
The event will be presented by Simon Wright, ‘champion of Welsh produce’ for Wales the True Taste awards, owner of Y Polyn restaurant in Carmarthenshire, and former AA Guide editor.
Kate Morgan, organiser of Pembrokeshire Fish Week, said the evening is a first for the festival, and a real coup for Pembrokeshire Fish Week.
She added that it promised to be quite unique. “I’m sure it’s going to be lots of fun, with some really inventive and inspiring seafood cookery,” she said.
Tickets for ‘Cook your Catch’ are £17 (£15 concessions), including a glass of wine, courtesy of Celtic Wines. Doors open at 7 for 7.30 pm. Contact the Torch Theatre Box Office on 01646 695267.
Mark Hix, former executive head chef for The Ivy and Le Caprice restaurants in London, has opened four Hix restaurants since 2008 and was awarded Chef of the Year 2010 (Catey’s). A renowned food writer with nine cookbooks to his name, he pens regular columns for the Independent on Saturday and won Cookery Book of the Year 2009 for British Seasonal (Guild of Food Writers). He has appeared on the BBC’s Great British Menu, Saturday Kitchen, and River Cottage.

Mitch Tonks is described by the Sunday Times as the new Rick Stein. He is the former Tatler Restaurateur of the Year, and labelled by the Independent as ‘a fishmonger for the 21st century’. One of Britain’s foremost experts on fish, he has written a wealth of seafood cookery books, with his 2010 book ‘Fish’ described as ‘one of the most important books of the year’ (Good Housekeeping).
In recent years, he has opened two restaurants and the Rockfish Grill and Seafood Market in Bristol. A popular and regular contributor to Pembrokeshire Fish Week, Mitch has hosted the Fish and Shellfish Masterclass as well as several tutored tastings, cookery workshops, and more.

Valentine Warner is returning to Pembrokeshire Fish Week for the second time, after hosting a popular Fish and Shellfish Masterclass in 2010. He has starred in two series of the BBC Two programme, What To Eat Now, in autumn 2008 and summer 2009.
His second book, What To Eat Now More Please: Spring and Summer, was published in spring 2009. Val grew up on a farm in Dorset, learning to fish, shoot and cook from a young age. He spent seven years working with top chef Alastair Little and ran his own catering company, Green Pea, which he set up with the manager of the River Cafe, and catered for big names such as Yves Saint Laurent and Gucci.
Bryn Williams is chef patron at Odette’s in Primrose Hill - one of London’s most highly-regarded restaurants - and is a regular on the BBC’s Saturday Kitchen and Great British Menu. Hailing from Denbigh in North Wales, Bryn Williams learnt to appreciate food and its origins from an early age.
He would go shooting and fishing with his father and uncle and worked in his local bakery learning the trade. He has worked in some of the most prestigious kitchens in London, including The Criterion under Marco Pierre White and Le Gavroche under Michel Roux for three years.
Anthony Evans was a keen fisherman and hunter from a young age, which sparked his interest in cooking. After attending catering college, he worked as a chef in top hotels in London, Cambridge and Bath for world famous stars, such as Robbie Williams, John Major, Pavarotti, and the Formula 1 Team.
He then returned to his home country of Wales and now presents his own cooking programme ‘Stwffio’ on S4C which has taken him around the world from Hong Kong to Japan, Morocco, Spain, Italy, and Iceland.
Pembrokeshire Fish Week 2011 will take place between June 25 and July 3. With more than 250 events all over the county celebrating the county’s coast, seafood and maritime heritage, the festival is one of the best and biggest in Wales.
