Prediction Indonesian Fishing Industry to Rise 10% at 2011

Chairman of the Association of Fishery Products Processing and Marketing Indonesia (AP5I) Thomas Darmawan said the target would be achieved if the domestic production of fishery products can be optimized.

In addition, continued Thomas, the government should also support the growth of national fishery product processing industry. Especially, in terms of funding issues.

The reason for this, the banks still consider that fishing industry is not a priority and included in the category of high risk. The government, said Thomas, also should be able to lower interest rates.

"In addition, other problems that hamper our industry at the moment is the price of fish and shrimp feed is still high. Then, the absence of security, and the issue of shrimp and fish seed that is free of disease and also illegal fishing is still going on," said Thomas in Jakarta, Monday (03/21/2011).

Thomas said, if the government can solve all problems, a national fishery processing industry will continue to move and ready to meet the needs of both domestic and export markets.
During 2009-2010, says Thomas, the production of marine products in the country is approximately 350 thousand tons. Thomas hopes, production could increase to 400 thousand tons this year.

"May be supported by all relevant parties, such as the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (CTF). As such it is a product of shrimp that can be sold in global markets," said Thomas.

Several major export destination for Indonesian shrimp such as Chinese which imports amounted to 100 million tonnes and the United States amounted to 600 thousand tons.

Related to the cost, said Thomas, during January to February 2011, continues to increase. The price of processed shrimp in the country reached Rp60 thousand-65 thousand per kilogram (kg) during January-February 2011. Meanwhile, in October 2010 only amounted to Rp40 thousand-Rp45 thousand per kg.

While the price of shrimp for export, on average, he added, in December 2010 was USD10, 52 per kg, and USD9, 7 in 2009.

"In 2010, Japan imported shrimp from Indonesia up to USD375 million. Imports, however, they declined since the tsunami and earthquake disasters, "he said.

Thomas said, the post-tsunami and earthquake in Japan, the cost of imports which must be issued by the Japanese is not too big. The reason, he said, Japan is prioritize to build infrastructure.

Imports of fishery products from Indonesia to Japan in April 2011, according to Thomas, are likely to rise a maximum of five per cent of monthly exports to Japan were approximately $ 30 million per month.

"The government can provide assistance to fishermen affected by the disaster. However, because the nationalism of Japanese people is high, so they continue to buy fish from its own production, "said Thomas.

Fresh tuna imports from Indonesia to Japan in 2010 was USD93, 2 million. Frozen tuna reached USD22, 2 million, canned tuna USD44, 4 million, USD37 fresh fish, 7 million, other frozen fish USD40, 3 million, and dried or smoked fish USD44, 1 million.

Thomas further explained, the price of processed fish for export of fresh tuna that is on average in 2010 was $ 6, 16 per kg, up from 2009, which amounted to $ 3, 59 per kg. The price of frozen tuna in 2010 was USD1, 74 per kg, an increase compared to 2009 is only USD1, 34 per kg.

As for the price of canned tuna exports in 2010 is $ 3, 40 per kg, down from 2009, which amounted to $ 3, 45 per kg.

"The price of processed fishery products continues to surge due to weather anomalies that still happens today, thus shrinking production and world demand is also high," said Thomas. (Sandra Karina / Newspapers SI / ade)
