Winter fishing derby makes big splash

The winter fishing derby is back and here to stay.
Miranda Dahl, owner of Hook It Up tackle and bait shop in Nakusp, put on a very successful fishing derby over the Jan. 21–23 weekend.

There were 131 entrants and 46 boats out on the water all vying for that top prize, and what a prize it was.
First place went to Jeremy Alstad catching a 17.5 pound dolly trout. Alstad took home $1,310 for winning.
Second place went to Greg Milne of Castlegar with a 14 pound dolly trout, earning him $780.
Third place went to Jessie Eslinger with a 12.8 pound dolly, earning him $550.

The entry cost for the contest was $20 per person, with all proceeds going towards the winners.
When asked if Dahl considered the derby a success, she answered, “Absolutely.”
“It’s confirmed it’s an annual thing,” she added. “Everybody was very happy, and people were really happy with the results.”

Dahl, a young new business owner herself, said this derby was obviously missed by people in the area, as can be seen with the massive response.
“I expected about half the people that actually showed,” she said outside of her store at the Nakusp marina.

And did people ever show up. There were folks from Kelowna, Armstrong, Alberta, Washington, Nelson, Castlegar, Lumby, Bernon, Revelstoke, and Nakusp all taking part in the event.

On top of a contest, Dahl and the Three Lions Pub held a celebration at the pub on Saturday night, which she said was completely packed.
“We had prizes going all weekend,” she said. “We did a bunch of door prizes and specials on all the derby tickets.”

Dahl said the value of all the prizes given away that night equalled about $1,000.
In the end, Dahl was very happy with the results.
“Oh, I’m just proud that it was a great weekend for people to enjoy their fishing,” she said.

And be on the lookout for more derby’s, as Dahl promises there will be more than just a winter fishing derby. She’s planning one for the spring, and possibly October as well.
Congratulations on a successful derby, and we hope to see mo
