Taiwan's fish production, show no signs of abnormal radioactivity: COA

Taipei, April 18 (CNA) Agricultural and fishery products and water used for irrigation in Taiwan have shown no signs of having higher than normal amounts of radioactive substances, the Council of Agriculture said Monday.

The council said that of the 66 items from 19 coastal fish markets sent to the Atomic Energy Council (AEC) between March 24 and April 15, no abnormal levels of radioactive materials were detected.

It said it had also issued more than 148 notices to Taiwanese fishing vessels being monitored with global positioning system devices that they were sailing too close to waters potentially contaminated by radioactive water discharged from a crippled Japanese nuclear power plant.

As for inspection of agricultural products, no abnormal levels of radioactive materials were detected on the 58 items sent to be tested as of April 13. The same applied for livestock and poultry items.

The council also conducted radiation checks on water in irrigation systems in New Taipei City, and Yilan, Hualien and Taoyuan counties, and found it to be free of radioactivity.

The council will continue monitoring the levels of radioactive substances in water used for irrigation and will regularly update the result on its official website, a representative of the agency said. (By Lin Hui-chun and Ann Chen) enditem/ls
