Bill Cyran, former Journal ad director and Lorain leader, dies at 72
LORAIN — The greater Lorain community has lost a unique and talented individual and a good friend.
Bill Cyran, 72, of Lorain, died Friday at the New Life Hospice Center at St. Joseph following a lengthy illness.
Cyran retired Aug. 29, 2006, as head of The Morning Journal’s advertising department.
“The Morning Journal was fortunate to have someone like Bill who truly cared about the employees and the advertisers that he worked with,” Morning Journal Publisher Jeff Sudbrook said.
“He was well-known and respected throughout the community. He had a great work ethic and personality to match,” Sudbrook added.
When Cyran took on his first Journal customer in 1960, John Kennedy had just won the presidential election over Richard Nixon.
Those in the advertising business agreed that, if he wanted to, Cyran could sell sand to desert nomads and whiskey to teetotalers.
A 1955 graduate of Lorain High School, Cyran’s first job was at the former Bob Beck Chevrolet, now the site of Carrion Auto on Broadway.
“I did oil changes, ran to get car parts and did some mechanical work. One day, Beck told me I’d be one hell of a salesman. At that time, I had no ambition to be a salesman. But I put on a suit and tie and he put me on the sales floor. There’s a talent there; you’re either born with it or you’re not,” Cyran said in a 2006 interview, when he retired.
