How Goldfish Came into Japan

According to records, goldfish came into Japan around the year 1500's, during precise ruling Shogun. Because it was expensive and the procurements of it depended on imports from China at that time, therefore goldfish was still limited as pets of the elite, especially the rich and government officials.
One of the interesting documents found at that time contained the rule or a description related to care of goldfish. The content of the rules stated a banning for Japanese people to care of and culturing goldfish.

In Japan there are three regions known as the goldfish-producing center, that is Koriyama in Nara province, Yatomi, Aichi province, and Tokyo. These three areas that that have generated about 1235 million tail goldfish in 1976.
In Koriyama, for example, there was a goldfish pond area of 880,000 m2 and concurrent rice fields, with production reaching 40 million tail goldfish in out 1976.

In Aichi, goldfish developed around the Kiso River since the early 20th century. The production was around 30 million goldfish per year and handled by 160 goldfish farm companies.

Tokyo (now the capital of Japan), has since the 17th century as producing-centers of goldfish. According to records in 1976, Tokyo, produced 35 million of goldfish tail. In this city, there was a goldfish pond covering an area of 300.00 m2, which is owned by residents and 43 goldfish farm companies. One of his famous breeder of this kawasa is Kchigoro Akiyami, owner of Goldfish Farm.

Goldfish from Japan marketed worldwide. Among others are exported to USA, UK, Germany, France, and also to Indonesia. According Yoshichi Matsui, in his book Goldfish Guide, Japanese goldfish are grouped into three based on the origin. Each is imported from China (wakin, Maruko, ryukin, domekin), the results of fish selection (Jikin, Nankin tosakin, tetsuanage, Osaka ranchu, hanafusa, ornamental shishigashira), and hybrids (kiranshi, shubunkin, shikin, kaliko, azumanishiki) .

The types of goldfish which is currently available in Japan are:

* Wakin (common goldfish)
* Hibuna (original goldfish)
* Jikin, rorukin, shachi or kujyaku (peacock tail goldfish / Peacock tail)
* Ryukin (Japanese Fantail goldfish)
* Domekin (eye goldfish telescope / telescopeye)
* Ranchu (maskokoi head of a lion / Lionhead)
* Chotengan (maskokinirwana / celestial)
* Shishigasira (ornamental goldfish)
* Azumanishiki (kaliko ornamental goldfish)
* Kaliko
* Shubunkin
* Tosakin (goldfish tail choppy)
* Shukin (long-tailed goldfish lion head)
* Kinranshi (goldfish hybrids from wakin and linhead)
* Tetsuonaga (Fantail goldfish-colored iron)
