ong Kong Customs Foils Marked Oil Smuggling by Fishing Vessel H
Hong Kong Customs Friday announced that about 150,000 liters of marked oil worth about 800,000 HK dollars (about 104,000 U.S. dollars) were seized during an anti-smuggling sea patrol on Dec. 7.
Customs officers intercepted a fishing vessel for investigation and discovered the marked oil on Tuesday when they were carrying out the routine patrol off Cheung Chau, an outlying island situated southeast of the territory. A pump and an oil gauge believed to be used for speedy extraction of the oil were also found.
The 47-year-old master in charge of the vessel was arrested after failing to produce any export manifests to cover the oil. He was later put on bail pending further investigation.
Under the Import and Export Ordinance, the maximum penalty is a fine of 2 million HK dollars and imprisonment for seven years. (1 U.S. dollar is equivalent to 7.772 U.S. dollars)
