New Bermagui and Narooma fishing reports: Dec. 22

New Bermagui and Narooma fishing reports: Dec. 22:  ESTUARIES are fishing well with Wallaga Lake producing plenty of flathead and good sized blackfish on weed at the bridge where a few jewfish were spotted last week along with plenty of garfish.

The Bermagui River and other smaller estuaries meanwhile are producing good bream.

Bottom bashing out wide has been patchy, but the long liners have been getting excellent catches of dolphin fish up to 15kg on the Tuross Canyon as well as some marlin, big eye and yellowfin tuna, and apparently a 500kg tiger shark in 21-degree water.

Kingfish at Montague Island have been hot and cold with the currents, while surf fishers have seen plenty of salmon and the odd tailor.

Narooma fishing report:

KINGFISH are on at the island with fish caught on the northwestern end on soft plastics and Lucanus style jigs, while bonito and snapper have also been taking bait.

A big flathead going at least 70cm was caught from the jetty at the Narooma marina while good blackfish have been caught off the rocks at low tide on cunjevoi.

Wagonga Lake is still a little off-colour after all the rain, which perhaps is impacting on the fish.

There are plenty of salmon on the beaches adding to the species that are still hanging around the recently opened small estuary entrances.

Frosty slither of water hits the South Coast

ALONG the coast, a frosty slither of water around 17 degrees is hugging the entire south coast like a mother in laws hug, but just a few miles out it’s been as warm as 21 degrees.

Despite the cold water being a turn off for some species, in this case the currents have actually concentrated some fish against the shore line and as a result there has been some good bonito, salmon, kingfish snapper and flathead being caught inshore.

Wind can have an effect on localized currents and water temperatures, land based rock fishos are at the mercy of these currents with spinning action running hot and cold.

Best bet is early and late in the day, especially during the in coming tide that falls this weekend.

The cold inshore water is also pushing a lot of extra bait into the rivers where the water is a times a little warmer.

Thanks to all the readers out there for your support across the year; and seasons greetings from myself and all the people who help make this column possible.

See you on the water,
