propsed closure of Lake Sutherland protest by Local fishermen

propsed closure of Lake Sutherland protest by Local fishermen(Port Angeles) -- Local fisherman are not happy with a plan to shut down Lake Sutherland and other local streams to fishing while the Elwha Dams are removed.

A large crowd told state Fish and Wildlife officials in Port Angeles last night to shelve the proposal.

The state proposes shutting down tributaries including the lake, that feed into the Elwha River for five years.

Fish and Wildlife regional fish manager Ron Warren says the moratorium would help to protect fish runs during dam removal and maximize the number of fish available to spawn in the Elwha River watershed.

Olympic National Park, and the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe have already endorsed a five-year fishing moratorium for the fisheries they manage in the Elwha watershed.

The Fish and Wildlife commission will hold another hearing on the fishing shutdown during its Olympia meeting January 7th and 8th.

The state's proposal could be adopted in February.

The first fishing shutdowns would start next fall.
