2 icebound ships freed, but icebreaker gets stuck january 05 2011
MOSCOW—Two Russian ships that were trapped in thick ice off the country's east coast have made it to clear water, but one of the icebreakers sent to rescue them has become stuck.
Three other vessels, with a total of more than 430 crew aboard, remained trapped in the Sea of Okhotsk for a sixth day Wednesday. The transportation ministry says those vessels have sufficient fuel and water, and there is no danger to those aboard.
A trawler with 78 people aboard was towed to waters where ice is lighter on Wednesday, Russian news agencies reported. But an icebreaker following behind became stuck. Another trawler that became trapped on Monday was able to free itself, the reports said.
The Sea of Okhotsk is an arm of the northern Pacific, west of the Kamchatka peninsula.
