Feedbacks from Anglers being on surveyed fishing activities

Feedbacks from Anglers being on surveyed  fishing activities

TRURO – The province is collecting feedback from anglers as part of a national fishing survey to identify up-to-date information which will be used in managing Nova Scotia's fishery.

A random selection of about 2,200 residents and 600 non-residents who purchased fishing licences in Nova Scotia in 2010 are being asked about their sportfishing activities in a survey mailed out today.

More than 63,000 Nova Scotians purchased fishing licences last year, up 24 per cent over 2005.

Every five years, Fisheries and Oceans Canada gathers data on freshwater and saltwater fishing. The results help provinces and territories identify trends in species sought, catch rates, angler preferences and spending habits.

"Sportfishing continues to grow in popularity in Nova Scotia and we are eager to see how much this increase contributes to the economy, particularly in rural communities," said Sterling Belliveau, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. "The co-operation of every angler sampled is critical to the success of this survey and will provide us with the best results."

The 2005 survey showed that 50,807 anglers, on average, fished almost 20 days each or close to one million days in Nova Scotia, of which 78 per cent were in freshwater and 22 per cent were in saltwater. Anglers spent $53.2 million in Nova Scotia on the sport in 2005, including $31.2 million on major items such as vehicles and boats and $22 million on supplies and services.
