Angling tribute produces limit of trout
Fishermen and hunters usually find their own special way to pay tribute to the man or woman who took them fishing and hunting for the first time. Don Belchamber of Alpine does so by using his father’s old fishing gear at the lakes the two of them visited when Danny Belchamber was alive.
Hugh Marx, supervising ranger at Lake Jennings, reports that Don Belchamber, using his father’s old Mitchell Garcia 304 reel and old rod, caught a nice limit of rainbow trout by 9 a.m. last week at the picturesque lake. Belchamber said he likes to fish Jennings, Cuyamaca and Morena, the lakes that he and his father frequented.
Jennings produced some very good trout fishing last week and should continue to do so this week with an additional 1,000 pounds of rainbow trout added from Mt. Lassen. Marx said it’s also big-bass time at the lake, a time when the bigger females are moving up and more vulnerable to trout-imitation swimbaits.
On the saltwater side, reports from anglers fishing San Diego Bay indicate a good bite on a variety of species there. It’s all happening in time for the 16th Annual San Diego Anglers Open Bay Bass Tournament set for Jan. 29. It’s unusual for there to be openings this late, but tournament director Dwayne Patenaude said 30 spots remain in the field that will be closed at 150 two-angler teams. Cost is $135 to enter, with first place paying $1,500. There’s also a giant raffle and fish fry open to the public that day east of the Shelter Island launch ramp. The San Diego Anglers use this tournament to fund several of their initiatives, including outings with kids, Wounded Warriors and others. Call Patenaude at (619) 972-1503.
