Charter boat fishing still the major economic impacts for area
Charter captains don’t need to be told that they make an economic impact, but now they can tell others just how significant their industry is, especially in Ludington.
A study conducted in 2009 by Michigan Sea Grant was carried by data from Ludington area captains, who heard about the research at an earlier session of the annual Sea Grant Regional Fishery Workshop in Ludington, like Saturday’s at Ramada Inn.
Seventy-eight percent of the 141 charter customers who took an online survey about their charter trip were Ludington customers.
The survey revealed some big numbers associated with the charterboat industry.
In 2009, there were 1,326 charter trips from Ludington, resulting in $611,848 in sales and generating 49,187 hours of employment.
Dan O’Keefe of Sea Grant noted that Ludington remains a fishing destination, as 80 percent of the people responding with the comment cards noted that they traveled to Ludington specifically to fish. Statewide, 74 percent of charterboat customers said they traveled specifically to fish.
Ludington customers also spent about $100 more on their stay than the state average. Statewide, customers estimated they spent about $1,263 while staying at a charterboat port, while in Ludington they estimated they spent about $1,373.
