Lobster fishermen waiting financial relief on Ottawa

Lobster fishermen in Nova Scotia are now waiting on word from Ottawa to determine whether any relief is coming for losses during storm surges last month.

Sterling Belliveau, provincial minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, met with federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea on December 7 to discuss possible financial relief for lobster fishermen.

What had begun as a mild, potentially lucrative fishing season has been mired in disaster for many fishermen after back-to-back storms in December caused “significant” losses to equipment and traps. Some fishermen lost all their traps.

"We asked that a special case be made for the LFA [Lobster Fishing Area] 33 and 34," Mr. Belliveau said. "There is no program for assistance for broken traps. She was open to that idea and asked our staff to follow up with more information we're gathering."

Mr. Belliveau added he'd like to see something in place in time for the spring portion of the fishery come April.Read More ...
