Cold water and shallow redfish fishing report: SE NC

Cold water and shallow redfish fishing report: SE NC

The water temperature has been extremely cold, down into the low 40s and high 30s a times, but there have still been some backwater redfish caught. The trout have either not been active or no one much is fishing for them, but at least we have not had any reports of trout stuns or fish kills like they have had to the north.

Hardy guides and anglers working on the backwater redfish are going into very shallow water on days the sun warms the darker banks up a little bit. You have to know what you are doing not to get your boat stuck, or you have to get out and pursue the redfish on foot in waders. They are feeding in the very shallow tidal pools of the back creeks where they can reach what mud minnows, fiddler crabs, and other small bait there is right now.

Fishing shallow and quiet you can work the redfish schools with mud minnows (which some local stores still have amazingly – those mud minnows are tough and resilient and so are the mud minnow netters). The most effective way to do it is just to put the mud minnow on a jig head (around 3/8 or ¼ ounce) and work it like a lure…only very slowly.

You can also fish Gulp scented baits this way (or other soft baits) if you have no mud minnows. The Gulp shrimp and pogy bodies work well with this type of slow, pull and pause fishing. On the rising tide around the marsh grass you can use a popping cork on the rig, but don’t pop it too often right now.

Other than the redfish the only real fishing option right now (unless you want to go after skates and dogfish in the surf) is black drum around the bridges and docks. There are still some feeding (seems like there always are) and I have gotten a couple of reports of guys catching some with cut shrimp in the afternoons.
