Could Be Hoax Russia Suspects Sinking Ship

Russia's Fishery Agency, Rosrybolovstvo, suspected that the SOS signal sent by the crew of the Partner schooner could be a hoax, Interfax news agency reported on Monday.

A crew reported the emergency in Tatar strait off Sakhalin island on Friday. The rescue operations failed to find the vessel or any of its crew.

Russia's Fishery Agency said the incident has raised many questions, as the schooner's owner did not disclose the crew members' names and no requests on the crew members' fortune from their relatives have come to the authorities so far.

The vessel, sailing under Cambodian "flag of convenience," was last seen in the Japanese port of Vakkanai on Wednesday.

Neither Cambodia nor the Partner's owner, a company from Belize, reported the loss of the ship.

Rosrybolovstvo said the schooner might belong to a poacher's company which has faked the loss of its vessel in order to clear the ship's history for further illegal fishing in Russia's territorial waters under a different name.

According to the Russian authorities, the Partner was once arrested in Russia's exclusive economic zone in August 2010. That time, the vessel bore the name Glen Grant. In October, the ship was returned to its owner on bail.Read More ...
