High tides makes Unskilled fishermen to fall victim

The body of another fisherman was recovered after three days rescue operation from Khahi Creek in the open sea near Karachi coast on Sunday evening.

Spokesman for Fishermen Cooperative Society (FCS) Welfare Department Ghulam Rasool Shaikh told The News that a boat Bahar-e-Madina left Karachi Fish Harbor (KFH) on January 9 with nine crew members. On the early morning of January 14 when the boat was returning back with a huge catch, a crewmember Bashir Khaskheli son of Mohammed Yousuf, who hailed from Jhuddo, Mirpurkhas, slipped into the sea and despite the efforts of his colleagues his body could not be recovered.

Following receipt of information, the FCS approached Maritime Security Agency personnel, who with the help of community fishermen, recovered Ghulam Rasool’s body on January 16. He said that two days back another worker Noor Rehman son of Akhtar Khan had also slipped from the boat and drowned in the open sea. The victim belonged to District Dir, Khaibar Pukhtoon Khuwa, and he had come only 17 days ago to Karachi for job and he was advised to work on the boat.

According to The fishing sector does not have a mechanism to recruit skilled workers or imparting training in swimming, harvesting and handling fishing nets at the fishing boats before taking them to the sea. Therefore, several people had fallen victim to such incidents. Earlier, only bona fide fishermen used to hire fish workers, who happen to be swimmers and aware of the ups and downs of the sea. In case of any accident, they may swim for several days and reach beaches or jetties on their own efforts. But now the rampant unemployment was forcing the youth belonging to non-fishermen communities, to work on boats at the risk of their lives.

“More than 14,000 boats are registered with Karachi Fish Harbour Authority. The boat owners have their own mechanism and FCS has nothing to do with them. They hire such unaware people, who should be imparted training of swimming and how to harvest nets and pulling them after some time to avoid any mishap,” he added.Read More ...
