Hundreds of Thousands of Fish Die After birds
The case of more than 1,000 birds collapsed after New Year’s Eve is not revealed yet. Then the Bird and Fisheries Agency of Arkansas, United States, is confused again with the death of more than 100 thousand fish in the river of Arkansas.
Hundreds of thousands of dead drum fish seen floating or swept to the edge. Surprisingly, dead fish that occur is only in river waters of the Arkansas, from Ozark dam until the 109 kilometers toll bridge, a distance is 32 kilometers. Arkansas fisheries agency’s spokesman, Keith Stephens, said the case began from last week and continues and it gets worse until this time. “We got a report last week from an operator who saw dead fish along the banks of the river, and then we immediately sent anyone to that place to see it,” Stephens said as quoted from page of Associated Press, January 2, 2011.
He said the fish die like that every year in the Arkansas River. But the number of deaths is very big and not as usual. We have a team of researchers who are still collecting samples of the dead fish. A firstly approximation, this drum fish die due to water pollution and infectious of diseases. The nature of drum fish that forage in the river’s base makes the drum fish as the most susceptible fish to struck waste that had been settled. “Ninety percent of dead fish is drum fish, which look for meals in the basic search. This fish is not easy to lure,” said Stephen.
Drum fish that enter into the Sciaenidae family is touted as the most powerful fish in this river. The meat of this fish also cannot be eaten. It makes this fish can grow large and are called as the most useless fish in the river of Arkansas. The death of hundreds of thousands of fish makes the reputation of drum fish worse.
“It is safe to fishing right now. You can still fishing for grouper and catfish, it’s okay. Just do not eat dead fish,” said Stephen. Responding to the possibility of contaminated waste streams, Stephen answered casually. He said we do not need to hold the cleaning because it will be done by the animals around the river. “There are raccoons and birds that will handle the cleanup, the area is too big for us,” he said.
