Mendez winning Jr. Bass tournament

Ariel Mendez built upon his success as a bank fisherman to win Sunday's Broward County Parks and Recreation Division's Jr. Bass Trail event at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach.

Mendez, 14, of Pembroke Pines, caught a five-fish limit weighing 7.1 pounds to win the tournament for anglers ages 12-17 fishing from the Bass Tender boat with a Minn Kota trolling motor and an Odyssey battery that he was awarded last month when he won the county's Bass Fishing Kids season-ending classic at Quiet Waters, a trail where youngsters fish from the shoreline.

Cody Dolan, 16, of Loxahatchee, was second with a limit weighing 7.05. Silvio Gonzalez, 12, of Homestead, another veteran of the shore-fishing trail, was third in his first Jr. Trail event with a limit weighing 6.6. Connor Porter, 17, of Parkland, had the biggest bass at 5.2. In all, 16 anglers weighed in 50 fish.

Fish of the week

Ed Knorr caught 16.22 pounds Saturday, including the big bass of 7.93, to win the Everglades Bassmasters of South Florida club tournament on at Lake Ida. Mark Sommer was second at 13.51, followed by Tony Crowder at 11.32, Bob Gallik at 8.65 and Ryan Cook at 7.55.

Mike and Andrew Barnard caught 13.27 pounds Sunday to win the King of the Glades Club Trail tournament out of the C-16 Canal. Billy Brown and Dave Mathis were second at 11.98, followed by Donnie and Tim Funk (11.79), Mike Armour and Eric Jhoran (11.7) and Judy Fairchield and Rick Cortina (10.23). Fairchield had the big bass at 4.73.

Capt. Alan Zaremba guided Bob Taylor, of Hollywood, to 35 largemouth bass using Stik-O's and floating Rapalas in the canals along Alligator Alley. Jim and Doloris Kimes, of Gonzales, La., caught 26 peacock bass up to 3 pounds using floating Rapalas in the C-4 Canal. Abe Gasper, of Sunrise, and his son Jeremy, of Hollywood, caught 36 largemouths up to 3 pounds using Stik-O's and trick worms in the L-29.

Fishing out of Port Everglades Inlet, Robert Milot and his son Jean Francois each caught his first sailfish as part of a doubleheader Saturday, along with two kingfish, a blackfin tuna, two skipjack tunas and 12 African pompanos on No Vacansea with Capt. Kevin Cote. Sunday, Cote guided Yvan Tardif and Sylvie Ledain, of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Quebec, to a skipjack, two kings, a cero mackerel and 12 African pompanos.

Rick Katz, of Coral Springs, caught six tilefish up to1.5 pounds, a vermilion snapper and an 8-pound snowy grouper Sunday afternoon on the Fish City Pride drift boat of Pompano Beach.
