Shipping ministry decides to hand over Paradip fishing harbour to Odisha Government
Bhubaneswar: The shipping ministry on Thursday decided to transfer the Paradip Fishing Harbour located in the area of the Paradip Port Trust (PPT) to the Odisha government.
The decision was taken at a high level meeting in New Delhi presided over by secretary to the shipping ministry K Mohandas. Among others, Odisha’s commissioner-cum-secretary, fisheries & animal resources development Satyabrata Sahu was present at the meeting.
Sahu was pursuing with the Centre for handing over the harbour to the state government to improve its conditions and boost export of fish from the state. Odisha presently exports fish worth Rs 400 crore to the world market per annum. PPT chairman G Jagannath Rao presented the proposal on the harbour at the meeting. He is taking active interest in promoting the State’s export trade from Paradip Port.
As per the decision, the harbour is to be transferred to the state government since operation of a fishing harbour does not fall within the core activity of a major port. The Paradip Fishing Harbour, commissioned in 1996, is used by an estimated 700 deep-sea trawlers and 2,000 plus medium-size boats.Read More ...
