SIMP changes makes Coffs Coast Fishermen unhappy

SIMP changes makes Coffs Coast Fishermen unhappy

Coffs Coast commercial fishermen are dismayed by the increase in Sanctuary zones in the Solitary Island Marine Park (SIMP).

Many local fishermen say they are now considering their futures because of reduced fishing grounds.

Geoff Blackburn from the Coffs Harbour Fishermen's Co-op says the government's $1.5-million voluntary 'buy-out' package is also inadequate.

He says the local market will soon have to depend on imported seafood.

"We are very fearful for the future of industry, individuals and indeed the co-op.

"We have absolutely no idea of the full effects of these decisions.

"There is no doubt there will be fishers unable to continue their operations and base themselves in Coffs Harbour," he said.

Mr Blackburn is predicting the region will probably have to depend on imported seafood in the future.

He says Sanctuary zones now cover 19-per cent of the Park, which means commercial fishing grounds have contracted.

"It could conceivably come to a stage where the size of the Co-Op will be greatly reduced because the fishers that are left will not be able maintain the service that we currently provide to Coffs Harbour," he said.Read More ...
