Children invites to fishing derby at Tulare Parks and Recreation
The Tulare Parks and Recreation department will host a fishing derby at Del Lago Park lake from 9-11 a.m. Saturday.
The event is open to children ages 2 to 15. Of course, parental assistance — in the spirit of safety — is allowed, making this a family-oriented event. "It's just a fun day for the whole family," Recreation Supervisor Lana Da Silva said.
Saturday's is the first derby this year. Last September, a fishing derby drew about 400 participants. The same turnout is expected, Da Silva said.
On Friday, 1,800 trout will be placed in the lake in preparation for the derby. But on derby day, participants will get to keep all fish caught — even if they're not trout. Da Silva said blue gale and catfish were planted for previous events. If any of those are caught Saturday, the fish must be kept.
"They can't throw fish back," she said.
Organizers will hand out prizes to the top three trout catchers (there's a five-fish limit for each participant) in two age categories: 2 to 7 and 8 to 15. There's a $3 registration fee for each child ,and prizes will be given to the top three finishers in the categories. Participants can register at Tulare's Parks and Recreation office, 830 South Blackstone St., or on site before the event.
Parents can help in installing the bait, casting the fishing rod and even using a net to catch and remove the fish, Da Silva said. Children, however, must reel in the fish. Participants must bring reels and bait.
