Vandalized Commercial fishing boats in North Plymouth marina
PLYMOUTH —Police are investigating an overnight vandalism spree that targeted commercial fishing boats in a North Plymouth marina.
Police said the vandals targeted at least a dozen commercial fishing boats stored for the winter at Jesse Marine on Hedge Road.
Police were investigating the possibility the vandalism might be the work of environmental activists after finding the initials ELF, an apparent reference to a group called the Earth Liberation Front, on at least one boat.
A fishing boat out of Scituate named Last Chance was visible from the gates of the marina. Someone added two words to the name on the boat’s stern, making it “Last Chance at Salvation.” The phrases “Slow Death” and “WHAT HAVE FISH DONE TO US?” were also painted on the boat’s hull.
"Save Our Seas" and "Crimes Against Nature" were painted on other boats.
"We're taking into account what we see on the boats and not counting anything out," Capt. John Rogers said.
Officers and detectives were still at the scene collecting evidence Monday afternoon. Rogers said there does not appear to be any immediate threat to fishermen.
