Weymouth RNLI volunteers assist sinking fishing vessel 03 january 2011

Weymouth RNLI volunteers assisted the crew of a fishing vessel who reported their boat was sinking on 3 January. The fishing boat was towed to safety but only after the crew had been evacuated by helicopter.

Weymouth RNLI Second Coxswain received a text message from the fishing vesselPurbeck Isle” stating they where sinking. He immediately informed the coastguards and the all-weather lifeboat crew were paged at 1.15pm, launching five minutes later.

The Coastguard Rescue helicopter arrived on scene first and lowered a winchman and a pump down to the vessel. When the RNLI lifeboat volunteers arrived they transferred two crewmembers and another pump.

The lifeboat then began to tow the fishing boat towards Portland Bill. However, with the situation worsening it was decided to take the three crew and the two lifeboat volunteers off the vessel by helicopter and try to tow the vessel around the Bill unmanned. This was successful and the all-weather lifeboat, the Weymouth RNLI inshore lifeboat and the casualty vessel arrived back at Weymouth at 6.20pm.
