Angry fishers protest marine park
ONE hundred angry fishing supporters gathered in Jack Evans Boat Harbour to protest a marine park off Tweed Coast.
The proposed marine park would include south of Tweed Heads to the northern tip of Cape Byron Marine Park.
The closest area would be three nautical miles off shore and the furthest, 44 nautical miles off shore.
Greens Richmond candidate Joe Ebono spoke on behalf of the marine park during the event and Sixty Minutes preseter Charles Woolley mediated for the two parties.
Tweed Coast Amateur Fishing Clubs Association secretary and rally organiser Angela Dennison said they were angry and wanted the candidate to hear their opinion.
“Fishing is one of the biggest sports in our country,” Ms Dennison said.
“If you can't do your sport and if you take that away, people's whole way of life is also taken away.”
The seafood industry, tourism, bait and tackle shops and fish and chips shops would also be affected, Ms Dennison said.
The rally organiser said the marine park would increase pollution and congestion in bordering fishing areas.
“When you close the fishing area down you push everyone into one area, that area will be decimated,” Ms Dennison said.
