Four died during a fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico
Four people died and one survived in the wreck of a boat during a fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico, said today the Louisiana authorities. Adam Einck, spokesman for the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Louisiana, said the five people left the Venice Pier in southern Louisiana, about 6:30 am Saturday, but the two engines of his boat went out an hour later. The boat filled with water and sank.
Einck said three victims were from Alabama and Louisiana. The survivor, a man from Alabama, was attached to a rope to the front of the ship overturned while the other four left to react, apparently from hypothermia. They were attached on one side of the boat and four life jackets, but failed to register when the boat capsized. The crew of a tanker supplies survivor found around 1:00 pm and transported to a vessel of the United States Coast Guard. Man treated for mild hypothermia, but refused to be hospitalized. Among those killed was the father of the survivor, an uncle and the bride’s uncle. Their names were not released immediately because they had not yet notified his family.
“It is believed that the four who died succumbed to hypothermia,” said the spokesman, adding that the survivors said they stopped responding after almost an hour. “ The fifth person managed to crawl to the top of the capsized boat and we believe probably so was able to leave the cold water.”
After the survivor was rescued, the bodies of four victims were found floating in the water by the crew of the supply ship and a vessel of Fisheries and Wildlife. The bodies were transported to the Coast Guard station in Venice. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife investigates deaths. Unable to retrieve the ship overturned on Saturday and will try on Sunday.
