There's an app for that Looking for sustainable seafood in B.C.?
The Vancouver Aquarium's Ocean Wise conservation program has launched an iPhone application that helps people locate sustainable seafood at 3,000 markets and restaurants across the country, including 1,800 locations in B.C.
The newly released application uses global positioning satellites, enabling the user to find the nearest sources of responsibly harvested seafood and it provides continuously updated, searchable lists of seafood choices to embrace or avoid.
Ocean Wise maintains lists of seafoods designated "approved" or "avoid" based on four criteria: a population that is abundant and resilient to fishing pressures, the existence of a well-managed fishery plan, harvesting methods that limit bycatch and use of harvesting technology that limits damage to marine environments.
"We have taken all the features of our website and put them on iPhone," said Ocean Wise manager Jaye Russell. The app also keeps you abreast of special Ocean Wise events and news, so you can follow the sustainable seafood movement in real time.
The iPhone app is the first phase of the Ocean Wise interactive media plan. "We will wait to see what our users tell us," Russell said.
The free application — developed by Quickmobile — is available at www.oceanwise.ca.
Ocean Wise has 360 corporate partners, from grocers to restaurant chains. About 80 per cent of Ocean Wise partner restaurants serve only Ocean Wise approved seafoods.
"This is a value-add for our partners as well, it means consumers can look for their locations and for consumers it means they can find out what their choices are when they are looking at a menu or choosing a fish at the market," Russell said.
