Three weeks left in ice shack contest
We’re three weeks into the BDN’s Original Ice Shack Contest. We’ve got three weeks to go.
And we want to see your ice fishing castle, no matter how humble (or extravagant) it may be.
Some anglers I’ve spoken with are a bit reluctant to enter, fearing that our panel of judges might not fully appreciate their on-ice abodes.
To those potential candidates, all I can say is this: You can’t win any prize money unless you enter. And three lucky ice anglers are guaranteed to win substantial prizes.
OK. “Prize money” isn’t exactly accurate. Old Town Trading Post, the sponsor of this inaugural contest, is giving out three gift certificates (which, the last time I checked, spend just like cash money).
Our grand-prize winner will receive a $1,000 gift certificate. Second prize is $600. Third-best shack is worth $400.
Over the past three weeks, we’ve received some interesting entries.
We have the young woman from Mount Desert Island who built a hot-pink-on-black shack for her senior exhibition project at MDI High School. We have the father-and-son entrants who have constructed shacks that are so big you’d need a team of workhorses (or a large pickup) to haul them onto the ice.
Some of our shacks have TVs or generators or indoor plumbing — or something like that. Another was built in 1947 and has been used every winter since.
And yet another is half shack, half truck — we’ll call it a shuck — and its owners simply drive it onto the ice, park and fish for the day.

Need a job? Work in the woods
Students with an interest in the outdoors and the willingness to work in remote locations might well have intriguing summer employment options this year, thanks to the Northern Forest Canoe Trail.
The NFCT has announced that it is accepting applications for its 2011 summer intern program.
Five stewardship interns will rove the paddling trail, which traces historic travel routes across New York, Vermont, Quebec, New Hampshire and Maine. Another two interns will be stationed on Maine’s Allagash Wilderness Waterway.
According to an NFCT press release, the interns will spend the summer on the water working on projects that include improving campsites, river access and signage. They also will lead groups of volunteers on overnight work trips.
The internships will run from June 16 through Aug. 16. Candidates must be at least 18 years old by the time the internship begins.

Moose lottery open
Moose season is months away, but it’s certainly not too early to start dreaming about your own hunt of a lifetime.
The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has announced that it is accepting applications for its annual moose permit lottery.
Interested applicants can go to www.maine.gov/ifw/ and complete the registration process in minutes.
The DIF&W does not mail paper applications to those who entered the year before. Those without access to the Internet can find an application on Page 2 of the Maine Sportsman or on the back cover of the Northwoods Sporting Journal. Or, if you’re traveling to Augusta, you can stop by the DIF&W headquarters and pick up a paper application.
This year the state will hand out 3,205 permits through the lottery system.
The deadline for online applications is 11:59 p.m. May 13.
