White bass runnings to explode
Timing is everything when it comes to white bass.
Fierce fighting for their size, white bass, a cousin of the striper, leave lakes for stream beds to spawn in late winter/early spring.
But the water temperature has to be just right – 57 degrees, to be exact, according to guide Ray Austin of Topcat Fishing.
The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department issued a press release this week saying the run has started in the upper end of Choke Canyon Reservoir and the Frio River and San Miguel Creek.
Austin fished Choke last weekend and caught mostly males and a few females who did not appear quite ready to spawn.
But there were no big stringers of white bass – yet.
This week’s cold front dipped water temperatures and pushed back the heat of the run by a few days or a week, Austin said.
When the run begins, it usually is hot and heavy for a couple of weeks before tapering off.
The run on the Guadalupe River at Canyon Lake is expected to begin a bit later because of the colder water in that large body of water.
During the runs, white bass don’t forget to eat.
They’ll hit on a number of lures including spinners, spoons and lures that look like shad.
The minimum length for white bass is 10 inches. The bag limit is 25 per person per day.
