Wanted to post this on the "Tide Lines" sight, but it was so full of "patent medicine" and "spirit water" ads, I decided to post it here.
Listen up guys, I've only caught two kings. I'm hooked. It disturbs me that this group is okay with 15,000 of these regal fish to be "bycatch", but 54,000? C'mon, pitch in if you will.
I received this from a Kodiak, Ak charter boat captain.
"In Alaska we are having some major problems with our sport fisheries. In 2010 the commercial pollock dragger fleet caught a bycatch of 54,000 king salmon. These fish did not go to feed families or food banks where they could be used responsibly. Instead, they were sent to a plant where fish waste is "cooked" down to a powder that is used as part of the ingredients for making cat food, cattle feed or fertilizer. This is a shameful waste of a majestic sport fish. We need your help in reducing this "bycatch" to a more responsible number of 15,000 king salmon. Please take the time to sign a letter of support started by Capt Dave Kubiak from Kodiak. This letter can be found along with additional information at www.akmarine.org. Our greatest wish is that all of Alaska's natural resources will be here for this generation and the next."
