Catch the trout fishing contest

Great trout fishing is available right in the middle of busy Takapuna at Lake Pupuke.
There can't be many such lakes in the developed world, yet Pupuke – fringed by multimillion dollar homes – is relatively underfished.

North Shore Fly Fishers in association with Trout Unlimited NZ hold a fishing contest there each autumn.
The main aim is to get more people fishing the lake for trout. A secondary objective is to obtain data about fish numbers, size and condition.

This year's competition is on May 1, from 7am to 3.30pm.
There's a healthy population of trout already in the lake, supplemented by perch and other species.

And fish numbers should be boosted some time before the competition by an injection of about 1000 trout from the Ngongotaha hatchery in Rotorua.
Rainbow trout of up to 5kg are rumoured to have been caught in Lake Pupuke, which is best fished in the cooler months.
Anyone intending to fish in the competition will need a freshwater licence, available from Hunts Sports Store in Crown Hill. Licences are free for anyone 12 or younger, while day licences cost $21 for adults or $4 for 12 to 17-year-olds.

Hunts has also donated $500 of vouchers as prizes for the heaviest fish caught on the day, plus spot prizes for juniors.
Any legal fishing method is allowed at a variety of shore locations and non-motorised boats are permitted. Life-jackets should be worn.

Call Phil Gates on 480-2334, or Dennis Smith on 376-3375, evenings, for information.
