Murrumbidgee river management questions

A western Riverina fishing club has joined in criticism about the management of the Murrumbidgee River.

Farmers and the Tumut and Gundagai Shire Councils have complained about fluctuating flows and have called for more attention to the river's environment.

The Hay Fishing Club says the river is devoid of native fish at Hay now when they were flourishing before the recent floods.

It says only carp have been caught in the river this year.

The president of the Club Noel Griffiths says black water in December killed the natives and they are working to restock.

But he says the main concern is the current management system.

"If they can control this river like a river should be controlled, not like a channel," said Mr Griffiths.

"Sometimes people want water down at Balranald, they'll let our weirs go first and then let water out of Burrinjuck or Blowering and it takes three weeks to get here."

"Our water drops, there's no water in the river. We can walk across it, our fishing are dying, our banks, they're all falling in because it's water up and down all the time," said Mr Griffiths.
