Barnett big BFL shot for locals

After being dominated in the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League opener on Pickwick Lake in March, the series will hold its second of five 2011 events Saturday on Barnett Reservoir.

The event will be staged out of the public ramps at Mississippi highway 43. Takeoff is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. and the weighin will begin at 2:30 p.m.

Roger Stegall of Iuka, who guides on Pickwick Lake, won the season opener with a 5-bass limit weighing 24 pounds, 12 ounces.

Only one metro area fisherman placed in the top 15 - Joe Barber of Brandon was 12th with 16 pounds, 12 ounces.

Making up ground at Barnett will be important. After the tournament, only two events remain to win points - June 4 at Lake Ferguson in Greenville and June 25 at Grenada Lake - before the series returns to Pickwick Sept. 24-25 for the two-day season finale.

A team from Ohio was second and an Alabama pair took third.

A Mississippi team, James Thompson of Winona and Jerry Rikard of Grenada, finished seventh in the amateur division.
Catch-A-Dream at Barnett May 1

Now less than a month away at Barnett Reservoir, the Catch-A-Dream Bass Classic will also include shotgun and archery competitions.

The May 1 bass tournament, the largest benefit event on Barnett, is expanding:

A 3-D Pop-Up Archery event will be held April 29-30 at Bass Pro Shops in Pearl.

Catch-A-Dream's annual shotgun event, usually held in Starvkille around the organization's annual banquet and auction, is moving to the Turcotte Shooting Center near the fishing tournament headquarters on Mississippi Highway 43 on April 30.

Catch-A-Dream is a Mississippi-based organization that provides outdoor opportunities for children with life-threatening illnesses.
