FRESHWATER: The St. Johns River from Lake Harney to Puzzle Lake has been very good for bass. Fish just off the grass lines along the banks with spinnerbaits, plastic worms and swimbaits. A few fish can be caught on surface lures at first light. Try a plastic frog and cast up on the banks, bringing them back through vegetation.
This prevents fish from spooking when the lure hits the water. You can catch a few catfish in deeper pockets of the river on nightcrawlers, minnows and cut liver or shrimp. A few crappie can still be caught near bridges. Minnows and jigs tipped with minnows work best. A few bigger crappie will hit spinnerbaits in deeper parts of the river.
SALTWATER: With light northwest winds predicted for today, it could be an ideal opportunity for sight-fishing cobia from Ponce Inlet to Sebastian Inlet. Many anglers have been heading to deeper waters early in the day, trolling and picking up a few dolphin and king mackerel before heading back in to look for cobia. Try fishing near buoys, weeds and anything else floating on the surface. Use jigs, eels or small bait fish for cobia. Big tarpon are starting to show up as well. Bonito, tripletail, Spanish mackerel, barracuda, crevalle jacks and sharks are all possible catches.
