NEW MELONES RESERVOIR/LAKE TULLOCH — Melanie Lewis of Glory Hole Sporting Goods in Angels Camp says trout fishing is getting better, especially for large German browns. Gary Burns of Take It to the Limit Guide Service was fishing with his friend Mitch Glassey of Oakdale, and they caught a 7-pound, 10-ounce brown by trolling a purple Shasta Tackle Cripplure at 34 feet beyond the Highway 49 Stevenot Bridge. The next day, Burns caught and released a limit of rainbows trolling pink Glitterbug Hootchies by the dam spillway.
Glen Woodbury from Sonora caught a 4-pound, 6-ounce brown from the bank on a crawler/white Berkeley Power Egg combo soaked in Pro Cure threadfin shad bait near Norwegian Gulch. Those trolling should target the main lake and upriver at 15 to 30 feet — deeper when the weather warms. Try a Wedding Ring or other small spinners tipped with a nightcrawler a behind flasher.
From the banks, try a sliding-sinker rig with at least a four-foot fluorocarbon 4-pound test leader and bait that floats (such as Berkley Select scented Power Bait, Power Eggs, or a crawler/marshmallow combo), a slip-float bobber with a stop at 15 20 feet. It's important to get the bait out of the submerged grassy areas. Kokanee are biting. Gary Burns trolled Glitter Bug Micro hoochies in pink tipped with garlic-scented corn at 20 feet near the dam for a limit. A few kokes in the 13- to 14-inch range are showing up. The Glory Hole Sporting Goods Seminar is this weekend, with numerous trout, salmon and bass guides and vendors on hand. Bass are ready to spawn and becoming more aggressive as the water warms.
Lewis advised searching areas with structure (fallen wood at 5 to 20 feet) with reaction baits or rainbow trout swimbaits such as S-Wavers or Toad Thrashers. Catfishing is best near creeks and run-offs with night crawlers, anchovies, or sardines. For crappie, Lewis advised targeting moving water with Beetle Spins, red/white crappie jigs, or small/medium minnows. Guide Danny Layne said water clarity on Tulloch has vastly improved and he's caught limits of rainbow trout to 16 inches near the surface on Vance's Slim Fins or Shasta Tackle's Cripplures. • SAN LUIS RESERVOIR / O'NEILL FOREBAY — Patrick Movey of the Fishermen's Warehouse in Fresno reported a huge striper — 50-pounds, 11-ounces — was brought to the shop by Kaav Thao of Fresno. He caught it on a white-ice fluke at night in the big lake. White ice flukes and ½- to ¾-ounce jig heads have been selling well at tackle shops due to a good bite in O'Neill Forebay for limits of schoolie stripers in the 22 to 24-inch range. Paul Jolley of Coyote Bait reported occasional stripers being taken by trollers near the dam or by dropping anchovy fillets. Blood worms and frozen anchovies have been the top baits, but jumbo minnow sales have been slow. Ly Tu at Ly's Fishing Goods in San Jose said the best action has been in the Forebay trolling Smithwick's or Rapalas for 18 to 22-inch stripers. ;

• McSWAIN RESERVOIR — The Merced Irrigation District Trout Derby starts Saturday at 7 a.m. and ends Sunday at noon. More than 50 fish will be tagged, with a grand-prize trout carrying a $3,000 prize. Two other tagged fish are worth $1,000 each. The largest untagged trout will pay $200. If the grand prize trout isn't caught during the derby, it's worth $500 until July 1. Entry fee is $10 or $25 per family. To qualify for prizes, participants must be registered. Diana Mello of A-1 Bait in Snelling reported Ruby Red Wedding Rings behind a baby cowbell flasher near the dam has produced trout limits while bank anglers have picked up limits at the brush pile with lemon-lime Power Eggs or rainbow/garlic Power Bait. Trout limits were taken near the PG&E plant on the river arm below the Hornitos Bridge on rainbow Power Bait. Call: (209) 378-2534 • McCLURE RESERVOIR
The bass bite is the best thing going. Manny Basi of the Bait Barn in Waterford said the Pro Worm Pro Gold or the Reaction Innovation's Bad Shad Green on the drop shot or the 3.5-inch Dry Creek tube in greenpumpkin/pepper all work as fish move to the banks. Diana Mello of A-1 Bait in Snelling said limits of bass over the slot have been taken on 3.5-inch Gitzits in brown craw/green sparkle at 5 to 15 feet in the Horseshoe. In Cottonwood and Temperance the bass are slightly deeper (down to 20 feet), biting on Magic Worms 4-inch purple ghost/chartreuse tail. Limits of crappie have been taken on medium minnows in the Horseshoe. There have been few trout anglers, but mixed limits of rainbows and king salmon have been taken from the Buoy Line near the Spillway with Apex Lures behind a Mack's Flash Lite dodger.
