Meghalaya holds a fishing competition

Jowai (Meghalaya) Oct 5 (ANI): Scores of anglers from across the north-eastern states took part recently in a fishing competition held at the Thadlaskein lake.

Legend has it that Sajer Nangli was a courageous commander of his warriors and on one of the memorial expedition he ordered each of his warriors to use their bow and dig the place where the lake was formed.

While narrating the tale, one of the members of the organizing committee, S K Lato informed that in memory of the great legend, the fishing competition is being organized annually.

"We do it here just to project the name and fame of great Sajer Nangli. This lake was dug in 15th century by the great man with a dig of bow and arrow. That was the legend. There is something significant about this hero. So just to project the name and fame of Sajer Nangli, we conduct this," said S K Lato.

This year with whooping prize money of 2,20,000 rupees and a car, many aspiring participants from all over the state and other parts of the northeast participated in the competition.

Although angling in natural streams is most preferred by any angler, the fishing at Thadlaskein Lake seemed a different experience as the participants were ready to pay an entry fee of even 1000 rupees to participate.

The swarming number of participants around the lake left hardly enough space for them to move but there was not a single complaint.

"We always used to go fishing here and there. So its fun and at the same time we are looking forward that if our luck is there, we can even get a chance to win the prize," said L. Kharjana, a competitor.

Angling is a usual pastime for retired persons who have enormous amount of time to relax by the riverside. However, in Meghalaya angling has developed into a culture and now a beneficial hobby. (ANI)
